The girls varsity basketball team won on consecutive nights against tough opposition for a perfect start to 2014.
The Jack M. Barrack Girls Varsity Basketball team won their first two games of the new year to move to an impressive record of 9-1 for the 2013-2014 season.
On Jan. 8, the Lady Cougars faced off against Academy of the New Church in the first of two straight home games and prevailed 41-33. Academy of the New Church has a regionwide reputation as a very strong basketball school, prompting Barrack's coach Rebecca Trajtenberg to call the victory "their best game all season."
Barrack led the contest from start to finish, handling ANC's constant press with great passing and ball movement. Sophia Shoulson led the Cougar scoring with 27 points. Lexie Gutierrez scored 8 points, Maya Shapira scored 4 and Talia Raikin scored 2.
The following night, Barrack hosted Westmont. The Lady Cougars won their fifth game in a row and ninth of the season, 24-16. Both teams were plagued by turnovers throughout the contest that resulted in the low scores. Sophia Shoulson again led Barrack with 12 points, Maya Shapira contributed 8 and Nora Abel and Tali Glickman scored 2 each.
The Barrack Boys Varsity Basketball team started their new year campaign on the road with a 41-56 loss at Collegium Charter. Ari Yosef led the team with 26 points while Elliot Bernstein had 7 points and 9 rebounds.
The team bounced back two nights later with a home victory against Kimberton 61-30. The win was Barrack's second of the season and moved them to a season record of 2-4.
The Cougar's balanced attack was once again led by Ari Yosef, who had 18 points. Elliot Bernstein and Jake Gordon had 7 each with Gordon also filling his stat line with 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists. Shawn Martin had 3 boards to go along with his 6 points, while Marc Meltzer and Jacob Reich scored 4 each. Meltzer also had 5 rebounds as did Avi Sloman, who finished with 2 points and 5 rebounds.
