A former Gratz College dean won a Jewish community service award.
Rela Mintz Geffen, former longtime dean of academic affairs as well as a sociology professor and Jewish community service project coordinator at Gratz College, has been named the recipient of the 2013 Mandell L. Berman Service Award.
The honor was scheduled to be accorded on Dec. 15 at a meeting of the Association for the Social Scientific Study of Jewry in Boston.
In addition to her work at Gratz, Geffen served as president of Baltimore Hebrew University from 2000-2007.
Geffen, who holds a doctorate in sociology from the University of Florida, is also a prolific writer. Among her publications: Centennial Volume of Gratz College: Freedom and Responsibility, which she co-edited with Marsha Bryan Edelman. Geffen has also written for the Jewish Exponent.
The award "recognizes the work of leaders in many sectors of the Jewish community whose efforts have advanced the social scientific study of Jewry."
