The apparent accident occurred just before 6 a.m. on Aug. 29, before the restaurant opened and with only a few staff people on the premises. No one was hurt, according to general manager Joe Mackay, who was not there at the time of the crash.
The driver, who has not been publicly identified, emerged from his red truck dripping with blood and was taken to the be treated by the Lower Merion authorities, who arrived on the scene immediately, Mackay said.
The truck demolished the left glass front window of the restaurant and crashed into the handful of tables in that area. “If it had happened one hour later, there would have been a room full of people eating at the tables,” Mackay said.
Anne Eppler, who has been a waitress at Hymie's for six years, was one of the first to arrive Thursday morning and said she was "stunned” by the destruction and debris she witnessed.
The only trace of the mishap on Friday was a boarded-up wall over the front window and a few scratches on some overhead beams. Outside a big banner waving in the breeze proclaimed: “We Are Open ‘Cause We’re Tougher Than the Truck!"
Mackay’s only been on the job a few months, one of two general managers, but he’s already got a good sense that the iconic eatery, which was the target of a burglary last year, is no ordinary place.
As he put it: “You don’t get the term ‘legendary’ without experiencing a couple of hurdles and quite a few exclamation points!”
