Joseph Halberstein, 83, a retired newspaper columnist, died May 30 at his home. He was a resident of Levittown.
Halberstein earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Ohio State University in 1944. He was associate editor and columnist at the Bucks County Courier Times from 1975 until 2003, when he retired.
Before joining that paper, he had been wire editor and then sports editor at the Gainesville Sun in Florida for 16 years.
In addition, he had previously worked in Delaware for the Wilmington Sunday Star, for a weekly in New York City, and for two papers in his native Ohio.
A past vice president of the Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors Association, Halberstein won several awards for his columns and for community service.
He also served on the board of Congregation Beth El of Levittown from 1977 to 1984.
Halberstein is survived by his wife of 42 years, Lillian Friedman Halberstein; sons Howard Halberstein and Richard Halberstein; a brother; and two grandchildren.
