Elaine Garfinkel, 79, an expert in Southwest native American art and a docent at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology, died Aug. 31 at her home in Center City.
Garfinkel was a co-founder of the Camde Gallery, one of the first Southwest native American art galleries in Philadelphia. She also produced art shows at Fox Chase Cancer Center and Lehigh University.
While on the women's committee of the museum in 1993, Garfinkel founded Peace Around the World, an annual holiday celebration. She also started an educational program to raise money to help poor children in northern Uganda in 2005.
She graduated from Temple University High School in 1947.
Garfinkel is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ramon; daughters Amy Mashberg and Susan; son Donald Garfinkel; a sister; a brother; and four grandchildren.
