Arthur H. Havsy, 72, Sports Official for the NFL, Penn Relays

Arthur H. Havsy, 72, a certified public accountant for 50 years, died Nov. 20 at his home.

Havsy's hobby was his involvement as a sports official, following in the footsteps of his father, Oscar Havsy, and uncle, Harry Schwartz.

Havsy spent more than 45 years representing the National Football League in Philadelphia, as the chief statistician for all of the Philadelphia Eagles home football games, by calling all of the yardage for each play, until 2005. He never missed a home game and even flew in from European trips in time to officiate.

He also served as the chief scorer of the University of Pennsylvania Penn Relays, culminating his more than four-score-year career there. Havsy received the Steinbrenner Family Service award in 2004 with his son, Jeffrey Havsy, who also worked the stats with him at the Penn Relays.

Saturdays meant University of Pennsylvania football games, where he also served as the official statistician at their home games for more than 45 years. IC4A track-and-field meets kept him busy officiating during the spring seasons.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, he was a graduate of West Philadelphia High School and Lehigh University, class of 1960. He was a partner in accounting firms in Montgomery County, retiring in 2008.

Havsy formerly served as treasurer of Congregation Or Ami in Lafayette Hill, and was in recent years a member of Congregation Kol Ami in Elkins Park.

Widowed, after the loss of his wife Nan (nee Steinberg), he reunited with his third-grade sweetheart, Janet Goleman Felgoise, then also a widow. They were married in 1988, and united the six high school and college-aged children of both families in Jenkintown.

In addition to his wife and son, Havsy is survived by a daughter, Lynne Unikel; stepsons Marc Felgoise, Roy Felgoise, Brian Felgoise and Glenn Felgoise; and 13 grandchildren.
