Federation will offer a small group of food and wine enthusiasts a unique Israeli experience this fall. Mark your calendars for a Taste of Israel, Oct. 30 through Nov. 5, a mission that combines the traditional itinerary of key historic and culture sights of the Jewish homeland with special lectures by Israeli chefs, gourmet meals at five-star restaurants and visits to boutique wineries and food markets.
"This is a mission experience tailor-made for Jewish foodies who are first time travelers to the Jewish state or repeat visitors who are looking for a fresh perspective," said Jeri Zimmerman, director of Federation's Center for Israel and Overseas. She explained that mission participants will ascend Masada, visit a kibbutz, see the famed battleground between David and Goliath, explore key spiritual and historic sites in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Tzfat and the Golan Heights while also celebrating Israel's "fun side."
One of the highlights of the trip is a behind the scenes tour of the famed organic dairy farm and vegetable garden which supplies Hotel Spa Mizpe Hayamim with all of its meat and produce. The five-star hotel, where mission participants will stay overnight, is situated on more than 37 acres of land, untouched since Biblical times.
During their stay, guests will participate in a cooking and baking workshop at Erez Komorovsky's world-renowned Galilee Cooking School then enjoy a specially prepared dinner at the chef's private home. Chef Komarovsky first rose to fame with his popular chain of bakeries, Lechem Erez, which helped to popularize artisan breads throughout Israel.
Mission participants will tour the Tulip Winery, located in Kfar Tikva, Hebrew for Village of Hope. This family-owned company brings hope to this special community where individuals with disabilities develop their full potential while working in the winery and learning the skills they need to be productive members of Israel's burgeoning wine industry.
This week-long mission, which includes six-night accommodations at luxury hotels and inns, daily Israeli breakfasts and gourmet lunches and dinners, escorted tours and admissions to exhibits and attractions, costs $3,800 per person, exclusive of air transportation. Participation is open to all members of the community who make a minimum gift of $1,800 to the Federation annual campaign.
