Israel may be more than 7,000 miles away from Philadelphia, but on Sunday, May 20, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., we will bridge the distance with a festive celebration of the music, arts, culture and cuisine of the Jewish homeland. Penn's Landing, along the Delaware River Waterfront, will be the site of Federation's Israel 64 Independence Day Celebration.
Festival guests will enjoy the music of Israeli singer Nurit Galron, our headline performer. Galron began her career in the late 1970s and still performs frequently across Israel. She has produced 17 albums in a wide variety of musical styles and has earned numerous gold and platinum music awards.
She recently released a new album, featuring lyrics from famed Israeli poet Nathan Zach, and also performed in a lead role in an Israeli television series called Reviat Ran.
A social activist, Galron works with women's groups in Israel. She has served as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, accompanying American actress Mia Farrow on a fact-finding trip to the Central African Republic.
Back by popular demand for a second year is the Isramerica House Band, a group of young Israeli and Jewish-American vocalists. The band performs in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and other languages with a repertoire of classic Israeli songs, rock ballads, ethnic Mizrachi music, klezmer, folk, Broadway hits, Israeli and American pop music and more.
Families can paint a Jerusalem mural that will be displayed during Jewish Heritage Night at Citizens Bank Park on Aug. 7 and participate in an archaeological excavation sponsored by the Franklin Institute.
Federation Early Learning Services (FELS) will sponsor a children's activities area for 4- to 7-year-olds which will be staffed by teens from the Satell Teen Fellowship for Leadership and Social Activism under the guidance of FELS site directors. Young people can stop by the KYW NewsRadio Kidcast booth and experience what it is like to be a real news reporter.
Everyone in attendance will enjoy festive foods, shopping at an Israeli marketplace, and learning about the activities and programs sponsored by community organizations.
Federation invites the entire community to come out for this free, fun-filled event. Federation is grateful for the support of Blank Rome LLP, Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, the Franklin Institute, the Jewish Exponent, PECO and U.S. Security Care.
