125th Anniversary

Celebrating 125 Years in Jewish Philadelphia

Every week since April 15, 1887, the Jewish Exponent has rolled off the presses into the hearts and homes of Jews throughout our region. Now, 125 years later, we stand tall as the second-oldest, continuously published Jewish newspaper in the country.

Over the years, we have been the voice and the mirror of our community. We have chronicled our triumphs and tragedies. We have informed, inspired and engaged Jews across the religious, political and demographic spectrums. And we have served as a source of spiritual reflection and social conscience.

Above all, we tell stories, the stories of your lives and the lives of your friends and family. We have recorded your births, your weddings, your simchas and your sorrows.

In this special anniversary compilation, we invite you to explore the different facets of Jewish life through the ages. We revisit the pivotal role that Philadelphia played in creating institutions and movements that would become part of the broader fabric of American Jewish life. We witness how Philadelphia Jews blazed a trail in the arts, education, religion and business and, by doing so, contributed to the growth not just of our community but of the cultural, economic and civic life of our city.

But even as we pay homage to our past (and who doesn’t enjoy a little nostalgia?), we look beyond our history toward the future. We tell our story, in part, through profiles of those whose lives reflect the rich and varied texture of our past, present and future. The individuals interviewed represent a mere sampling of the many personalities who have helped shape who we are and where we are going.

Both the Exponent and our community bear little resemblance to the way we looked 125, 75, even 25 years ago. But one thing hasn’t changed through the ages: the central role of the Exponent in helping to build community by bringing us together for communal conversation and common cause.
