Keneseth Israel, founded in March 1847, was the fourth congregation to be established by the expanding Jewish community of Philadelphia. Orthodox in observance at first, KI adopted reform in 1855, and thus became the first progressive congregation
Come to KI a Shabbat experience like no other. For the first time ever, Rock Shabbat features our teen modern rock group, The Hebrew Hammers and our adult classic rock group, The
Jewveniles, performing live together.
The intergenerational, collaborative effort is a showcase of family talent.
Our Shabbat prayers get the rock treatment at this musical service. The Hammers give a modern rock twist to the Bar’chu, singing it to the popular tune “Hey Ho.” The Jewveniles sing the V’Shamru to the Grateful Dead’s “Truckin’,” and together, the groups perform L’Cha Dodi to the famous Doors song “Hello, I Love You.”
Our visual presentation that evening will have a “retro” feel, with images reminiscent of the heyday of rock and roll. Even Rabbi’s sermon will be in keeping with the theme, as we learn how something that doesn’t seem Jewish, like rock and roll, really can be Jewish.
