White Pines Productions just announced that it will be hosting its second in a series modern-day “Happenings.” This event will also double as a fundraiser to benefit White Pines’ 2014 Resident Ensemble Program. The Happening, with live performances from White Pines’ summer ensemble residents from 2013, will take place on Sunday, August 18, from 7-9 p.m. at Underground Arts (1200 Callowhill St.).
Launched in the summer 2011, the Resident Ensemble Program is a centerpiece of White Pines’ mission. It offers performing arts ensembles (chosen from a nation-wide pool) a week of room and board, as well as a unique opportunity to create new works or to continue developing existing ones.
The program is, as of yet, unfunded for the year 2014.
This year’s ensemble groups are: New Paradise Laboratories from Philadelphia, Banana Peel Dance from New York City and NEW NOISE from New Orleans. Each group will perform during the Happening benefit, and each performance will derive from a new work developed during the group’s 2013 summer residency with White Pines.
During this Happening (a term invented by mid-20th century artist and critic Allan Kaprow who wished to view the artist as a creator or coordinator of experiences, rather than view art as a set of created works), there will be prepared as well as chance events, as well as fun and unusual raffles and games. Monies raised from ticket sales and raffles will benefit next year’s summer ensemble residency program.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/429435 .
