Opening the Gates of Torah Inclusion Speaker and Fair
December 15, 2013 2:00 PM
Featuring Shelley Cohen, Executive Director of the Jewish Inclusion Project.
A recent poll done by Respectability USA in conjunction with Jerusalem Online showed that an overwhelming 89% of 18-29 year olds cared about the inclusion of people of disabilities more than they even cared about their Jewish affiliations and more than they cared about their connection to the State of Israel. The issue of being inclusive of people with disabilities, who make up almost 20% of our community, weighs so heavily on our young people—and yet our Jewish institutions are still struggling to accommodate this population.
Cohen will address the current state of affairs and talk about how we need to cultivate leaders and lay people alike to be proactive in creating an inclusive Jewish community in our schools, synagogues, camps and Jewish communal organizations.
Following Cohen's keynote address, facilitated break-out groups will be available for:
* Jewish communal professionals (rabbis, teachers, executive directors, etx.)
* Inclusion Committee members and other congregational volunteers
* Special education/resource room teachers
* Individuals with Special Needs and their family members
Inclusion Fair: Come meet the Jewish Special Needs Consortium. Explore resources and services available in your community.
