Having a (Mirror) Ball

If you’ve given up on ever getting back to the club again now that you've achieved parenthood, think again. Native son Andy Blackman Hurwitz is one of the two partners responsible for Baby Loves Disco. (Full disclosure: our children went to the Solomon Wilf Preschool at the Kaiserman JCC together years ago.)

Created in 2005 as a way to get families with children ages 6 months to 7 years old into a fun, social and kinetic environment, BLD has proven to be something of a pop culture phenomenon. There are now Baby Loves Disco groups in 21 cities, including in countries as far as Japan and the United Arab Emirates.

What can you expect at a BLD event? First and foremost, no Barney, no KidzBop — just real music played by real DJs. Some disco, to be sure — it couldn’t have disco in the name, otherwise, right? — and pop as well (think LMFAO, Katy Perry, Carly Rae Jepsen, etc.).

In Philadelphia, the events are held in real nightclubs, like an upcoming shindig at Shampoo on the edge of Northern Liberties. The fun spills out from all corners of the club: bubble machines, baskets of scarves and egg-shakers, a chill-out room (with tents, books and puzzles), a full spread of healthy snacks and, of course, dancing, LOTS of dancing. There are even spirited dance contests and a bar for non-driving adults. Additionally, thanks to a sponsorship deal with H&M, the December event will likely include merchandise giveaways.

At its core, though, Baby Loves Disco is a community event that brings kids together with kids and parents together with parents.

Hurwitz sums it up best on his website: “It’s more than just something to do for the kids. Baby Loves Disco is fun for parents. We get the chance to mingle with other parents, dance with our kids and have a Saturday afternoon cocktail to boot.”

See For Yourself:

The next Baby Loves Disco event will be held on Dec. 9, 2012 from noon to 3 p.m.
Where: Shampoo Nightclub, 417 N. Eighth St., Philadelphia
Cost: $15 per "walking human." (Crawlers get in free).
