The members of our Greater Philadelphia Jewish community have demonstrated their steadfast emotional and financial support of Israel over the past four weeks. More than 2,500 people turned out for a solidarity rally in Philadelphia’s LOVE Park on July 23, organized by our Federation in conjunction with some 100 community partners.

Many of us have also generously supported the Israel Emergency Fund. These gifts are already hard at work, transporting children out of the line of fire, providing trauma support, assisting Israel’s most vulnerable citizens with basic needs and a great deal more.

Our Federation’s response to the current crisis has been extraordinary. And it underscores just how important our work is as a community.

It is also a reminder of what makes the Jewish Federations of North America’s General Assembly — the G.A. — so important. The G.A. is the premier leadership retreat for Federation volunteers and professionals engaged in the business of Jewish philanthropy from across North America and around the world. It is not just an exciting event, it’s a powerful symbol of what we do.

With Israel under fire, we know that our solidarity as a global Jewish community is more essential than ever.

But it’s also essential that Federation volunteer leaders, professionals and concerned Jewish community members continue to explore new ways of thinking and new forms of leadership.

Now more than ever, we need to discover how to strengthen and invigorate our communities in fresh ways.

Our very own Gail Norry, Federation’s incoming campaign chair, is a co-chair of the 2014 event.

It will feature a multitude of dynamic presenters, including: Isaac Herzog, chairman of Israel’s Labor Party; Marlee Matlin, Academy Award-winning actress and social activist; United States Supreme Court Justices Stephen Breyer and Elena Kaplan; Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, the former chief rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth; NBC’s chief White House correspondent, Chuck Todd, and its chief foreign correspondent, Andrea Mitchell, and a host of engaging  speakers.

Get ready for unexpected and innovative thinking. Get ready to be inspired to new heights. And get ready to have an incredible time doing it.
