Samuel “Shmeel” COHEN, 91, of Ventnor, died on November 1st. An Overbrook High School graduate, Sam served in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict and obtained the rank of First Lieutenant serving with the 17th Infantry Regiment and the 7th Infantry Division. Sam was the owner of Jay's Elbow Room tavern in Maple Shade. He was an active member of Congregation Beth Jacob in Merchantville, Congregation Beth Judah in Ventnor, and the Aventura - Turnberry Congregation in Aventura, FL. Sam was a member of Avoda, the FAM Justice Lodge, B'nai Brith, the Allied Jewish Appeal, and the Jewish War Veterans Post 39. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Lavin Cohen and is survived by wife, Evelyn Pfeffer Cohen, children, Jay (Joan) Cohen, Judith (Tim) Cohen Braggins, and Mark Cohen, sister Ida Goldstein, and his loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in his memory may be made to Cong. Beth Judah.
